PART 1:
World Geography Games
Found on https://world-geography-games.com/
I found that these games are good for learning more about country/continent/flag identification but not necessarily garnering interest in the subject as a potential major.
Intended audience- This site claims that their games are for people of all ages. I think that is accurate but I do not believe high school/college students would be interested in these types of games.
After realizing that I was not having luck by searching for geography games, I was browsing Epic and I noticed that there are some word building type games that could be somewhat relevant.
Island Idle RPG https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/island-idle-rpg-350c2e
Found on Epic
Island Idle is very similar to the My Island game I mentioned above. While this game is also a casual game that revolves around world building, it is also listed as a simulation. In addition to managing resources to build, you also must utilize them to defeat enemies. I believe the core dynamics here are territory acquisition and exploration.

My Island https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/my-island-6fc611
Found on Epic
My Island is an open world game where players get to explore different Islands. While exploring, players use the island’s resources to build a world. I found this game to be relevant in that it involves resource management and system building. While this game is in the “survival” genre on Epic’s website, I think this falls under the casual game category as well. I believe the core dynamics are exploration and construct or build.
Intended audience- I think the type of audience that would enjoy this game are the types that enjoy casual or cozy games since there is not much action happening rather simple task completion and resource management.
Games For Change
I feel that this game is relevant to the client’s project in that it involves creating a route to travel, then utilizing the history and culture of the area- based on my research, this seems similar to what geographers do. I believe the core dynamic here is race to the finish.
Intended audience- The game is rated “E” for everyone but I think this game is intended for a younger audience such as middle schoolers.
PART 2:
When conducting my research, I noticed two types of games that most relevant geography games would fit into, role-playing/world building types of games and games that focus on country/continent/flag identification.
Throughout my research, the question that I had the hardest time finding an answer to was “what does a geographer do?” Even after reading through the sources, I found it tough to grasp what a realistic day to day would look like for someone working in the geography field. I think a game that simulates a day in the life of a geographer would be not only interesting but it would also help people get a better view of a Geographers job, which might encourage college students to apply. I also think it would give potential students a way to “try out” the job.
